Understanding the McMaster NSC Purge Just like in Iraq, Harvey began digging at the NSC. He came up with a list of Obama holdovers who were leaking to the press. McMaster, the new head of the NSC, refused to fire any of them. McMaster had a different list of people he wanted to fire. It was easy to make the list. Harvey was on it. All you had to do was name Islamic terrorism as the problem and oppose the Iran Deal.If you came in with Flynn, you would be out. If you were loyal to Trump, your days were numbered. And if you warned about Obama holdovers undermining the new administration, you were a target. One of McMaster’s first acts at the NSC was to ban any mention of “Obama holdovers.” Not only did the McMaster coup purge Harvey, who had assembled the holdover list, but his biggest target was Ezra Watnick-Cohen, who had exposed the eavesdropping on Trump officials by Obama personnel. Ezra Watnick-Cohen had provided proof of the Obama surveillance to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes. McMaster, however, was desperately working to fire him and replace him with Linda Weissgold. McMaster’s choice to replace Watnick-Cohen was the woman who helped draft the Benghazi talking points which blamed the Islamic terrorist attack on a video protest. After protests by Bannon and Kushner, President Trump overruled McMaster. Watnick-Cohen stayed. For a while. Now Ezra Watnick-Cohen has been fired anyway. According to the media, Watnick-Cohen was guilty of “anti-Muslim fervor” and “hardline views.” And there’s no room for anyone telling the truth about Islamic terrorism at McMaster’s NSC. McMaster had even demanded that President Trump refrain from telling the truth about Islamic terrorism.(…) President Trump promised a reset from Obama’s anti-Israel policies. McMaster picked Kris Bauman as the NSC’s point man on Israel. Bauman had defended Islamic terrorists and blamed Israel for the violence. He had urged pressure on Israel as the solution. Ideas like that fit in at McMaster’s NSC. Meanwhile Derek Harvey, who had tried to halt Obama’s $221 million terror funding prize to the Palestinian Authority, was forced out. This too is part of the pattern. As Caroline Glick has pointed out, the personnel being purged in the McMaster coup “are pro-Israel and oppose the Iran nuclear deal.” When Adam Lovinger urged that “more attention be given to the threat of Iran and Islamic extremism,” his security clearance was revoked. Robin Townley was forced out in the same way.
Zionist Organization of America demands Trump fire National Security advisor McMasters over his ‘negative’ view on IsraelZOA, one of the few Jewish organizations to consistently defend US President Donald Trump has issued a report on Thursday sharply critical of McMaster. In the report, ZOA claims that McMaster is undermining Trump’s Middle East agenda and the relationship between the United States and Israel by firing officials supportive of the Jewish state and critical of the Iran nuclear deal, including Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the hawkish former senior director for intelligence on the National Security Council. It also asserts that McMaster hired people ZOA claims have negative views on Israel, naming Kris Bauman, who will serve as point man on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Dina Powell, the deputy national security advisor. The report calls on Trump “to remove General McMaster from his current position and reassign him to another position where he can do no further harm on these critical national security issues.” On Friday, Trump called his national security adviser “very pro-Israel,” an apparent bid to end a barrage of attacks from the right that have depicted McMaster as hostile to Israel. “General McMaster and I are working very well together. He is a good man and very pro-Israel. I am grateful for the work he continues to do serving our country,” Trump said. Within the White House, McMaster is seen at odds with Trump’s top strategist Steve Bannon, whom McMaster had removed from the NSC’s principals committee. The ZOA in its statement on McMaster lamented his removal, calling Bannon “a strong opponent of the Iran deal, and a staunch supporter of Israel.”ZOA first shared its negative assessment of McMaster with Breitbart News, the right-wing web site Bannon headed before joining the Trump campaign, according to a report on the site.
The ‘Alt-right’ Plot Against McMaster, Spurred by Its Jewish Fellow Travelers The recent Breitbart News “scoop,” headlined “Exclusive – Zionist Organization of America Analysis Determines McMaster Hostile to Trump, Calls for Reassignment,” is the latest indication of the unholy alliance between the so-called alt-right and extreme Zionists that seeks to oust U.S. National Security Advisor General H. R. McMaster. Breitbart reported that ZOA, “backed in large part by Trump ally GOP mega-donor and Israel defender Sheldon Adelson, is calling for President Trump at the very least to reassign McMaster to a different administration position where he can do no more harm to Israel and efforts to battle radical Islamic terrorism.” Breitbart added that the ZOA’s critique, articulated by its long-time president Mort Klein, “was provided to Breitbart News exclusively ahead of its public release.” Until he joined the administration, Steve Bannon headed Breitbart, a source of nasty, often misleading reports that at times had anti-Semitic overtones. Mort Klein, the ZOA’s leader, has long been known as an outlier on the American Jewish spectrum, reflecting the most extreme views of the Israeli settler community and its allies in both Israel and America. One of those Israeli allies isCaroline Glick, who hasarticulated views similar to Klein’s. If ever there was a ménage à trois made in hell, it is this one. Bannon wants to see McMaster gone because he recognizes that his influence over American national security policy has diminished since the general arrived on the scene. McMaster’s predecessor, General Michael Flynn, had included Bannon in the deliberations of the Principals’ Committee, which evaluates national security recommendations to be forwarded to the president. McMaster had Bannon removed from the committee. McMaster has also undertaken the systematic purge of several of Flynn’s more extreme and less competent assistants, which has outraged Klein and Glick. In addition to her anger at McMaster’s dismissal of people she insists are Trump loyalists, Glick has asserted on her Facebook page that “according to senior officials aware of his behavior, he constantly refers to Israel as the occupying power and insists falsely and constantly that a country named Palestine existed where Israel is located until 1948 when it was destroyed by the Jews.” For his part, Klein has voiced particular displeasure over McMaster’s dismissal of Ezra Cohen-Watnick, a relatively inexperienced low-level analyst at the Defense Intelligence Agency whom Flynn, a former DIA director, had hired as a senior director for intelligence on the National Security Council staff. Cohen-Watnick’s defenders have praised him as“a staunch opponent of the Iran nuclear deal and Islamist terrorism, who ‘sought to reform the intelligence community to rein in the ‘deep state’ of unaccountable bureaucrats with rogue agendas.’” On the other hand, Cohen-Watnick is generally seen in Washington as an unreconstructed ideologue, much like his former boss at the DIA and NSC. Moreover, and again, like Flynn, he has ties to Russia, in this case, via his wife. A recent investigation by the Los Angeles-based Jewish Journal revealed that Ms. Cohen-Watnick worked on behalf of the Russian government to improve its image in the West. Cohen-Watnick is known to be close to Jared Kushner, Trump’s equally inexperienced son-in-law. But whereas Kushner blocked McMaster’s previous attempts to fire Cohen-Watnick, the arrival of General John Kelly as White House Chief of Staff changed the White House power equation and Kushner no longer was willing to defend his protégé. As it happens, McMaster is no enemy of Israel. Quite the contrary; he has long supported a strong U.S.-Israeli defense relationship. His sin is to reflect the bipartisan Washington consensus on the Middle East. He has not been a vocal proponent of abrogating the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as JCPOA, and is an advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is noteworthy that Trump, known for all his blunt statements and tweets, recently recertified American adherence to the Iran deal. In addition, Trump has voiced his support for a solution to the Middle East impasse that would result in an independent Palestinian entity. McMaster is therefore not out of step with the president, but with the « alt-right » ideologues and their Jewish fellow travelers.(…)He is being vilified by people who themselves have perpetrated anti-Semitic slurs, and by Jews who are prepared to ignore those slurs when it suits their ideological purposes.
